Academic and Literary Vocabulary: Unit 1
paraphrase - to restate written or spoken words in your own words
summarize - briefly state the main idea of the text
genre - a type of literature
point of view - the perspective from which a story is told
first person - the narrator is a person in the story using first person pronouns (I, we ,me) to tell what he sees or knows
third person - the narrator is someone outside the story using third person pronouns (he, she, they) to tell the story
conflict - a struggle between opposing forces or between characters
internal conflict - the character struggles with his or her own needs, desires, or emotions
external conflict - a character struggles with an outside force, such as another character or something in nature
diction - a writer's or speaker's choice of words
synonyms - words that mean the same thing
antonyms - words that have opposite meanings
dialogue - conversation between characters
characterization - the act of creating characters
sequence - to put things in an order
chronological - to sequence events in the order in which they occurred
personal narrative - a story based on one's own life and told in the first person
cause/effect - a relationship in which an action or event will produce or cause a certain response or effect in the form of another event
connotation - the suggested or implied meaning or emotion associated with a word (sensory language)
denotation - the literal meaning of a word
simile - compares two unlike things using "like" or "as"
metaphor - compares two unlike things without using "like" or "as"
analyze - to separate something into parts and study how the parts are related
sensory language - refers to words that appeal to the five senses
transitions - words used to link or connect ideas
coherence - the clear and orderly presentation of ideas in your writing or speaking
short story- a fictional narrative that presents a sequence of events, or plot, that includes a conflict
theme- the central idea, message, or purpose of a literary work
plot- the sequence of related events that make up a story
personification- a type of figurative language that gives objects or abstract ideas human characteristics
foreshadowing- clues or hints signaling events that will occur later in the plot of a story
science fiction-a genre in which the imaginary elements of the story could be scientifically possible. It differs from fantasy in that it is possible that the story could happen.
exposition- the events that give the reader background information needed to understand the story. The introduction to the story usually reveals the setting, the major characters, and the conflict
rising action- the major events that develop the plot and lead to the climax
climax- the turning point in the story, at which the conflict could be resolved in different ways
falling action- the events that begin to conclude the story and lead to the ending
resolution- the events that conclude the story and reveal the theme
